Red Pitaya Smoothie Bowl

Pitaya is an exotic fruit that grows on a cactus specie that is indigenous to South America which is now grown in many other countries. You might also know pitaya as dragonfruit, strawberry pear, Belle of the night, cactus fruit, Kaktus madu and night-blooming cereus and whatever you call it,  this beautiful fruit is covered with a scales like skin which surely reminds of a dragon’s skin. This fruit is gaining a lot of attention because of its gorgeous vibrant pink/ red hue that makes a beautiful smoothie and is packed with healthy goodness. It feels like a treat because it tastes so good without any added sugars.

The bright hue of pink and red pitaya always gets me! Well, I mean who can ignore their vibrant colours? Red pitaya is not so common here in Australia and I only got to find it twice so far. You can find pink pitaya chunks in the freezer aisle in most supermarkets and the fresh ones once in a while in farmers markets or grocery stores. You can also find the freezer-dried pitaya powder nowadays and it is great alternative if you cannot find the fresh or frozen pitaya. Pitaya with the white flesh is the most common one out of all.

When you are working with pink or red pitaya, it is important to use the right colour combination to get the magical looking result. There is nothing more disappointing than throwing this beautiful fruit into a blender and losing it’s colour completely.

This is such a fun smoothie to make with the kids as it is super easy and the colour of this smoothie will win your kids’ hearts. It also a smart way to get the fruits into your little one and feel free to add any fresh greens like spinach or kale into this red pitaya smoothie. You will not lose the colour, instead, it will give you a slightly deeper red.
